Descrizione
La chiesetta di S. Gerardo sorge nell’omonima contrada. La sua costruzione risale al 1909.
Nella metà del mese di settembre, in onore del santo, protettore delle donne in gravidanza e dei bambini, si tiene la festa della contrada. In questa settimana si tengono numerose celebrazioni che si concludono poi con la sagra del panzerotto.
La Santa Messa viene celebrata ogni domenica mattina alle ore 11.00.
Il santo
Gerardo Maiella nacque nell’aprile del 1726 a Muro Lucano (Pz), figlio di un umile sarto. Nel 1752 prese i voti solenni nella Congregazione del santissimo Redentore, e fu canonizzato nel 1904 da Papa Pio X, in seguito al riconoscimento dei miracoli da lui compiuti.
Gerardo Maiella è oggi universalmente riconosciuto come protettore delle donne in gravidanza. Si ricorda, infatti, che prima di morire, lasciò un suo fazzoletto presso la casa di una famiglia che l’aveva ospitato. Una bambina gli corse dietro con l’intento di restituirglielo, ma lui si raccomandò di conservarlo. Trascorsi alcuni anni, morto ormai frate Gerardo, la bambina divenuta sposa, a causa di complicanze sopraggiunte durante il parto, non aveva speranze di vita. Ma ricordandosi del fazzoletto di S. Gerardo, che fu posto sulla pancia, i dolori cessarono e diede alla luce il suo primo figlio. Nell’ottobre 1755, S. Gerardo morì di tubercolosi nel convento di Materdomini all’età di 29 anni.
Il culto del santo è vivo nelle zone da lui visitate, tra cui Foggia, Potenza, alcuni paesi della provincia di Avellino, Monopoli e Muro Lucano. A Piedimonte Etneo si trova un santuario dedicato a lui e a S. Antonio Abate, in cui si trova la Sala dei fiocchi, le cui pareti e soffitti sono ricoperti da migliaia di fiocchi rosa e celesti che le mamme hanno donato al Santo nel corso del tempo.

In the middle of September, in honour of the saint, protector of pregnant women and children, the celebration of the hamlet is held. In that week there are many celebrations that end with the festival of panzerotto.

The Saint
Gerardo Maiella was born in April 1726 in Muro Lucano (Pz), son of a humble tailor. In 1752 he took his solemn vows in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, and was canonized in 1904 by Pope Pius X, following the recognition of the miracles he had performed.
Gerardo Maiella is now universally recognized as the protector of pregnant women. Is reminded, in fact, that before he died he left one of his handkerchiefs at a home of a family which had hosted him. A little girl ran after him with the intention of returning it to him, but he recommended keeping it. After few years, after the dead of friar Gerard, the girl became bride and due to complication during childbirth had no hope of life. Nevertheless, she remembered the handkerchief of St. Gerard and placed it on her belly: the pains ceased and gave birth to his first son. In October 1755, St. Gerard died because of tuberculosis in the convent of Materdomini at the age of 29.
The devotion of the saint is alive in the areas he visited, including Foggia, Potenza, some town in the province of Avellino, Monopoli and Muro Lucano. In Piedimonte Etneo there is a sanctuary dedicated to him and St. Anthony Abbot, where there is the Hall of Bows: its walls and ceilings are covered with thousands of pink and celestial bows that mothers have donated to the Saint over time.
