Sulla lama che solca il Giardino Botanico si affaccia la chiesa rupestre di Santa Cecilia, a navata unica, provvista originariamente di iconostasi e di un sedile continuo nella zona del bema.

Per il ricco programma decorativo che si svolge lungo le pareti la chiesa rupestre è da considerarsi la più importante tra quelle note nel territorio di Monopoli, per quanto le cattive condizioni degli affreschi ne rendano difficile la lettura.

Nell'abside è raffigurato il Cristo Pantocratore seduto su un trono perlinato tra la Vergine e San Giovanni Battista; sulle pareti vi è una serie di figure di Santi mentre nel naos sono le scene del martirio di Santo Stefano e di San Lorenzo e le storie di Maria con l'Annunciazione, la Visitazione a Santa Elisabetta e la Natività con l'arrivo dei Magi.

La chiesa è citata nella Bolla di papa Alessandro III del 1180, che riporta tutte le chiese della Diocesi di Monopoli.

La chiesa sorge nel territorio del giardino botanico "Lama degli Ulivi"; è raggiungibile dalla provinciale Monopoli - Alberobello; a 3 km. da Monopoli seguire l'indicaizione "Bordo rurale Cristo delle zolle".

On the Lama that runs through he Botanical Garden faces the Rupestrian Church of St. Cecelia, with a single nave, originally provided with iconostasis and a continuous seat in the area of the bema. Due to the varied decorative program that takes place along the walls, this Rupestrian Church is considered the most important among those known in the Monopolitan territory, despite the poor conditions of the frescoes which make a difficult interpretation.

In the apse is portrayed the Christ Pantocrator sitting on a pearly throne between the Virgin and St. John the Baptist; on the walls there is a set of figures of Saints while in the naos there are the scenes of the martyrdom of St. Stephen and St. Lawrence and the stories of Mary with the Annuciation, the Visitation to St. Elizabeth and the Nativity with the arrival of the Three Kings.

The church is mentioned in the charter of Pope Alexander III in 1180, which reports all the churches of the Diocese of Monopoli.

The church is located in the territory of the Botanical Garden “Lama degli Ulivi”; it can be reached from the provincial road Monopoli-Alberobello; at the third kilometre. From Monopoli follow the indication “Bordo rurale Cristo delle Zolle”.
