In periferia di Monopoli lungo la strada che porta ad Alberobello, in una proprietà privata e in un contesto rurale ricco di coltivazioni, sorge la chiesa rupestre di Santa Maria della Stella, una chiesa scavata nella roccia a unico vano rettangolare, divisa a metà da un pilastro e provvista di un’abside. La chiesa nel tempo ha subito rimaneggiamenti, pertanto sono presenti altari, oltre a quello centrale, non coevi ma più recenti rispetto al periodo di frequentazione medievale della chiesa.

Del medioevo non si conservano affreschi, mentre un affresco con l’immagine di una Madonna con bambino protetta in una teca con vetro si trova sull’altare centrale. Lo stile dell’affresco, infatti, fa sicuramente dedurre che si tratti di una composizione tarda rispetto ad altre pitture rupestri medievali sparse sul territorio.

Si accede in chiesa dal fianco sinistro dove c’è un piccolo portale sormontato da una lunetta; uno spazio antistante all’ entrata accoglie i fedeli durante le feste mariane, periodo in cui il tempio è molto frequentato.

A distanza, prima di giungere, è visibile il bel campanile a vela che termina con una raffinata croce litica.

On the Monopolitan outskirts, along the road that leads to Alberobello, in a private property and in a rural context rich in crops, we can find the Rupestrian Church of St. Mary of the Star, a church carved into the rock with a single rectangular space, divided in half by a pillar and provided with and apse. The church has undergone changes, so there are altars, in addition to the central one, not coeval but more recent than the period of medieval attendance of the church.

Of the medieval time there are no frescoes, while is located on the central altar a fresco with the image of a Madonna and Child, protected in a glass case. The style of the fresco, in fact, certainly suggests that it is a late composition compared to other medieval cave paintings scattered on the territory.

We can enter to the church from the left side, where there is a small portal surmounted by a lunette; a space in front of the entrance welcomes the faithful during the Marian feasts, a period in which the temple is very popular. Remotely, before reaching, we can see the beautiful bell tower that ends with a refined stone cross.

The church is open all the Saturdays of the year, and in May also on Thursday.
